How to Maximize the Efficiency of Your Domestic Water Heater

Water heating accounts for a large proportion of the energy in most homes today. However, since it is impossible to do without hot water in the home, most people are left with no option but to endure the scaling utility bills every year. What you may not know is that maximizing the efficiency of your water heater can cut down energy costs by a significant proportion and generate reasonable savings. Read on to find out some of the ways you can improve the performance of your water heater and reduce heating costs in the home.

Drain the heater regularly

If you don't have a water filtration system or softener in your home, there is a high possibility that the water in your heater contains mineral deposits, dirt particles, tiny garments of piping, and other forms of sediment. The sediment settles to the bottom of your heater and accumulates over time. This buildup impedes heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of the system as it will require more energy to heat the water. Draining your water heater after every three months or so can help get rid of the sediment and restore the efficiency of your heater.

Insulate your hot water tanks

Most modern homes today are going for tank-less water heaters which avail hot water instantly without storing it. If your home has the traditional hot water storage tank, you can prevent heat loss in your storage unit by insulating it. When the system is forced to work harder to keep the water hot at all times, it will consume more energy. Consider insulating the tank and a section of the piping that's connected to the hot water tank. Besides reducing your energy bills, insulation will also ensure that there is hot water in your shower when you need it.

Upgrade your hot water system

Sometimes all you need is to ditch the old water heater that breaks down often and consumes much energy, and replace it with a new energy-saving model. There are numerous options that you can choose from, ranging from tank-less water heaters to gas on-demand systems. Consider upgrading your water heater if it's more than a decade old, has lost its efficiency, or has been repaired more than a few times. Although the initial cost of installation will be high, you will make significant annual savings by having a new and energy-efficient model.

Proper maintenance of your water heater is paramount to maximizing its efficiency. Call a professional for regular inspection and tune-ups so that you can cut down on utility costs.
